To the editor:

Memories flooded in today when I read about the Sound View sale in The Suffolk Times

The Levin family and mine are linked together all the way back to Jack’s Shack on the beach in the 1940s. As a little girl, my friend Jimmy and I spent all summer on the Southold Town beach. After swimming for hours, my dad would give me some change and we would scamper up to visit with Jack Levin while eating ice cream cones.
As I was growing up, once a week my grandparents, parents and I would have lunch on the porch of the Sound View Restaurant. I would stare down at the water and wish I could jump in.

My first husband and I had our honeymoon in the motel in 1970. When our son was 18 months old he fell asleep into his chocolate pudding at the table on the porch.

When my kids were little, my parents treated them once a week in the summer to lunch there with Poppy and Nanny.

My friend Jimmy, who was a frequent visitor with his mom and dad, had his mother’s memorial luncheon there when she passed.

Last summer, Jimmy and I had lunch on the porch and remembered Mr. Levin and our talks with him.

Now, my children and grandchildren often eat there when visiting Long Island. So you can see, reading of the sale was sad news for us. The end of an era. But love can make the memories last.

My best to sisters Rachel Levin Murphy and Ellen Levin Wiederlight and your families on your new chapter.
