Oysterponds News: North Fork Audubon preps for winter bird walk
Who’d a ‘thunk’ that the cavalier comment at the end of my last column would precede a record-breaking blizzard for most of the N.Y. metro area — and that Oysterponds was grateful for “just a foot” of snow? Here’s to the predicted warmer forecast for the next two weeks.
That means the weather will be mild for the North Fork Audubon Society’s pre-Valentine’s Day winter bird walk with Tom Damiani, which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Orient Beach State Park. Afterward, the program continues at Poquatuck Hall with a yummy lunch of homemade soups and crusty breads, homemade desserts and warm tea and coffee. Then there will be a screening of the critically acclaimed film “The Messenger.” The cost is $20; please send your check to North Fork Audubon Society, P.O. Box 973, Mattituck, NY 11952 by Feb. 10.
Speaking of warm food, the East Marion Community Association’s annual potluck will be this Saturday, Feb. 6, at the firehouse. Bring a dish to share that serves six. EMCA will supply beverages. This year they will also collect gently used coats and warm outerwear to donate to those in need. For details, call Robin Imandt at 631-903-7708.
Oysterponds Elementary School recently tapped into our local talent for Artist Week, with participants Carolyn Bunn, Aubrey Mayer and Alan Bull, who demonstrated the techniques they use and shared their love of their chosen profession. The students thoroughly enjoyed the programs. Art teacher Laurie Sanders wants to express thanks from the school and the students.
Former East Marioneer Jim Salminen has penned yet another book. (If you remember, he wrote about growing up in East Marion, the son of 92-year resident Genevieve Salminen.) He also wrote “My Quest to Fly,” about his 27 years in the Air Force. His latest title is “Moments With Him,” which chronicles events over the years during which he felt God’s power and presence in his life. This is fitting because, since the Air Force, Jim has served God as a Methodist minister for 20-plus years. He hopes his book will bring encouragement to those seeking a relationship with God. There are so many fun things happening at Floyd Memorial Library — yoga, adult coloring, book discussions, potluck dinners, etc. — that I’m just going to suggest you go to floydmemoriallibrary.org and choose for yourself. We are so blessed to have this great facility in our community.
Tasha Bondarchuck got in touch this week to send out a special thank-you to the snow angel who unsolicitedly plowed her folks’ driveway (methinks his name rhymes with Pat Caffery) and to the two unidentified dog-walking ladies who passed by and helped her mom off her icy porch. Will someone help me out here and identify themselves? I checked the usual suspects and so far no success.
