Greenport News: Souper Bowls fundraiser at the high school

Spring is less than a month away (25 days, to be exact). Can I get an amen and an alleluia on that one? I’m ready for birds chirping in the trees, mowing the lawn and even spring cleanup.

Congratulations to Mike Quillin, recently named Greenport Fire Department’s “Fireman of the Year,” and Jeff Weingart, who was named “EMT of the Year.” It’s nice to see that hard work and dedication are recognized.

The school garden committees in Southold and Greenport have teamed up again to present the fourth annual Souper Bowls fundraiser Sunday, March 13, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Greenport School cafeteria. Bring your own bowl and spoon and sample as many soups as you like from a wide array, generously donated by chefs from many area restaurants. There will also be live music, kids’ crafts and a bake sale. It’s a great way to mingle with your neighbors on the last weekend of winter! Proceeds benefit both school gardens. I don’t yet have information ticket prices or where they can be purchased. Stay tuned!

Greenport High School senior Aidan Pollock has been nominated by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand for an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Congratulations, Aidan!

Reminder to GHS students who plan to play a varsity or JV spring sport: Get those contracts in now! The season starts March 7, and if your completed contract — signed by you, your parent and the school nurse — isn’t submitted before that date to the Athletic Office, you will not be allowed to begin practice. A current concussion test must also be on file with athletics.

shadowI’m ending this column on a personal note. Our sweetheart of a cat, Shadow, has gone missing. He’s on the large side, yellow and white in color. If anyone has perhaps picked him up thinking he was feral or has even seen him, please, please give me a call at 631-477-9411. Jim and I are heartbroken and just want him back home.
