Joseph Edward Tandy

Joseph Edward Tandy of Southold died Feb. 23. He was 29. 

Former Mattituck resident Joseph Edward Tandy of Southold died Feb. 23 at Stony Brook University Hospital after a brief illness. He was 29.

Mr. Tandy was born Nov. 16, 1986, at Southampton Hospital to Barbara and Jack Tandy and graduated from Mattituck High School. He attended Dowling College, Suffolk County Community College and Community College of the Air Force.

Mr. Tandy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2008, serving as an aerospace propulsion specialist and achieving the rank of technical sergeant. He was a member of the Air Force Reserves and was deployed three times: once to Afghanistan and twice to Africa, serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Most recently, he worked at Gabreski Air Force Base in Westhampton as an engine mechanic on HC-130 and HH-60 Pavehawk helicopters.

Mr. Tandy began dating Tara Buczak, a fellow Air Force reservist, in 2008. The couple married Nov. 10, 2013, at Brecknock Hall in Greenport after winning Peconic Landing’s “Veterans Day Wedding Giveback.”

Mr. Tandy belonged to the Maratooka Club and Southold American Legion. Family members said he enjoyed working on cars and hanging out with friends in the garage or around a backyard fire.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Tandy is survived by his mother, Barbara, of Moriches; his father and stepmother, Jack and Donna Tandy of Mattituck; his brothers, Michael, of Bellport, and Ethan, of Mattituck; and his in-laws.

The family received visitors Feb. 26 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A funeral Mass was held Feb. 27 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Interment followed at Cutchogue Cemetery.
