Driver killed after pickup truck struck by LIRR train in Mattituck

A westbound Long Island Railroad train struck a pickup truck at about 1:08 p.m. Tuesday in Mattituck at Elijah’s Lane and the driver of the vehicle was killed, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Southold Town police.

Southold Town police chief Martin Flatley confirmed the driver had been killed.

MTA spokesman Sal Arena said the gates were down at the crossing and the train was carrying four passengers in addition to the crew, none of whom were injured.

The 12:42 p.m. train from Greenport was due to arrive at Ronkonkoma at 2:06 p.m. Bus service will replace train service between Greenport and Ronkonkoma.

The pickup truck ended up on the northbound side of the tracks in a wooded area following the accident.

MTA Police and local authorities are on scene investigating. Mr. Arena said no further information was immediately available. Mr. Flatley said MTA Police have jurisdiction in the case.

Last year, an engineering inspection vehicle struck a tractor at a farm in Laurel about three miles away from this accident.
