Joseph P. Giello

Joseph P. Giello of Greenport died March 21, 2016, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 98.

Joe was born in Minnesota Feb. 3, 1918, to Paul and Mary (Rizzo) Giello and raised in an orphanage.

From 1939 to 1945, Joe served in the U.S. Army and participated in the Army’s Northern African Campaign and invaded Sicily. Through his service, he became a disabled veteran because of the loss of two fingers.

In his youth, he was a golden glove boxer in Manhattan. He enjoyed golfing and playing pool, fishing and watching old movies. He will be remembered as a great cook and a devoted New York Yankees fan..

Joe was also a Fourth Degree Knight with Knights of Columbus.

Formerly of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, Joe has lived on the North Fork for the past eight years.

Predeceased by his wife Athena in 2000, he is survived by children, James of Texas, John of Florida and Diana Riddell of Southold; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors March 24 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services were conducted by Deacon Austin Stack. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.
