Mary Poppins at Southold High School

As I write this, the town is buzzing about SNOW… yes, first day of spring and we are forecast to get four to eight inches of snow. Ack!

Now there is a two-hour delay; it must be serious. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I would love a snow day since my oldest is in town visiting and they could get in some sibling time. On the other hand, I’m ready for flowers, no coats, noisy birds and flip-flops. Mark this on the calendar: I am not doing my snow dance!

Birthdays: Sarah Perry, March 24; Savannah Alexander and Rebecca Guarriello, March 25; Michael Horne, March 27; Flynn Klipstein, Joe Manfredi, Reese Dunne and Tyler Lang, March 28; Melissa Grzegorczyk, March 29; Jessica Dunne, March 30; Brendan Mullen, March 31; Brian Becker, April 2; and Virginia Rubin, April 3.

Randee Daddona’s birthday isn’t until April 4, but she received a very special early birthday present March 19: her second Emmy Award for her work with Newsday. She was able to share the excitement with her husband, Lenny, and mother, Arline Reiner. Congratulations and happy birthday, Randee!

Congratulations to the Southold High School Robotics team on making the quarterfinals at the Cleveland Buckeye Regional competition. You can see them compete at Hofstra Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2. The event is free and open to the public.

I don’t think there’s a right word to describe Southold Drama Club’s presentation of “Mary Poppins,” so I’ll simply say it was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! From the ensembles right on up to the leads, the students were spot on in their performances. Tapping toes to familiar songs, abundant laughter and delight in the flying were experienced. Congratulations!

The Southold PTA is hosting a chinese auction at the elementary school Sunday, April 3, from noon to 4 p.m., with a preview Friday, April 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. There is no entry fee and winners need not be present at the time of the drawing. Refreshments will be available for purchase. To whet your appetite, some examples of auction items include Disney World tickets and a Hampton Jitney ticket book in the $10 tier; an American Girl doll and signed Rangers puck in the $5 tier; and local gift certificates and a lotto tree in the $1 tier. North Fork Animal Welfare League is hosting Pins for Paws and it’s bound to be a striking good time! The event takes place Friday, April 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The All Star bowling alley in Riverhead. The $25 fee includes shoe rental and two games. There will also be prizes and raffles; refreshments will be available for purchase. The event benefits the Southold and Riverhead animal shelters.

My next deadline is Sunday, April 3, at noon. As always, you can call and email me with info as early as you like. Remember to live outside your box: Volunteer at a local charity, help out a neighbor or simply take the time to see the world that’s bigger than just ourselves. As always, greet the people you see with a smile; it could change someone’s day!
