Update: Jamesport’s Community Spelling Bee cancelled

Jamesport Meeting House officials have cancelled the annual Community Spelling Bee, which had been scheduled for Friday, May 13.

On Monday, Jamesport Meeting House president Richard Wines said in a statement the event was called off due to a lack of participants.

“Unlike in our first two spelling bees, each of which drew more than 25 spellers, not enough people signed up this year to make it a lively competition,” he said. “I think we may have run into scheduling conflicts with other events in the area, which kept registrations down.

“Next year, we’ll need to do a better job checking the calendar.”

The first charity spelling bee was held in 2014 at Jamesport Meeting House. Last year’s competition featured 29 participants. Event proceeds support the restoration fund for the historic building.
