Cops: New Suffolk man charged with aggravated DWI

A 25-year-old New Suffolk man was arrested early Friday morning for aggravated driving while intoxicated, Southold Town police said.

According to a police press release, authorities responded to a single-car accident on Jackson Street in New Suffolk around 1 a.m. The vehicle’s driver, Aaron Avent, was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested for aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor.

Police said they initially thought Mr. Avent’s vehicle had crashed into the water near Jackson Street. Upon arriving at the scene, they realized his car wasn’t in the water but had crashed into an embankment, according to the release.

Mr. Avent was transported to police headquarters to await a Friday morning arraignment, authorities said.
