Riverhead Raceway: Handley wins second straight Blunderbust race

Jack Handley Jr. of Medford made it two Blunderbust wins in a row Sunday when he won a 30-lap main event at Riverhead Raceway. Jimmy White Jr. of Southampton won the Grand Enduro 50-lapper while Ben Gregor of Bridgehampton won his second straight 50-lap Truck Enduro.

Tim Mulqueen of Levittown was second in the Blunderbust race, with Tom Puccia of Shirley third.

In the Grand Enduro, David Antos of Lindenhurst was second. Brian McCormack of Holbrook crossed the line third.

In the Truck Enduro, Gregor led for the final 15 laps. Don Nelson Jr. of Rocky Point was the runner-up. Hank Hallock of Riverhead placed third.

He started racing the 8-Cylinder Enduro back in the heyday of Enduro racing in 1991. Twenty-five years later, Sean Fitzpatrick of West Babylon finally grabbed the brass ring, winning a 65-lap main event. Jarred Halsey of Southampton moved out front when the race got underway and dominated the first two-thirds of the race. He seemed destined to win his first career race, however, a lapped car played havoc the with race leader. Fitzpatrick slipped underneath him and drove on to his first career triumph. Brian Halsey of Southampton and Mike Sorrentino of Lindenhurst were the next two finishers.

Bryan Kelly of Aquebogue was not going to be denied a 60-lap 4/6-Cylinder Car Enduro victory. Even though he lost the lead to perennial winner Steve Trimboli of Freeport on Lap 37, he rebounded to reclaim the lead on Lap 53 before going on to win. Trimboli had to settle for second place. Joe Warren Jr. of Ridge took third.

Warren saw his day improve toward the end of the afternoon when he swept both the Gut & Go Enduro and the Mini 8 race.

In the Gut & Go race, a 60-lapper, Warren broke into the race lead on Lap 2 and never looked back. Mike Mujsce Jr. of Westhampton was second and C.J. Zurkowski of Riverhead claimed third.

In the 20-lap Mini 8 race contested on the Figure Eight course, Warren passed William Quinn of Selden for the lead on the 14th lap and held on to it. Quinn finished second, with Michael Rommeney of Bohemia motoring in third.
