Cops: Three people rescued after boat capsizes in East Marion

An East Marion man helped rescue three people, including two children, whose boat capsized Wednesday night in Peconic Bay, Southold Town police said. 

Salvatore Agosta, 39, told police he heard people screaming in the water from his East Marion home about 7:45 p.m. After contacting the police, he responded with his own boat and managed to pull three people aboard from the water and transported them to Klipp Park in Greenport, police said.

The driver of the boat, a 36-year-old Westbury man, was returning from a fishing trip with his two children, ages 9 and 5. His boat began to take on water to the stern, police said. He lost power to his engine and the boat eventually capsized from the water it took on.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Southold Town Marine Division and the East Marion Fire Department Marine Unit all responded after Mr. Agosta called police.

The three people on the boat were transported by the East Marion Fire Department to Eastern Long Island Hospital for evaluation, police said.

The boat was towed by Douglass Marine.
