Cutchogue News: Stop by the Centennial Children’s Garden
Memorial Day may be the unofficial start to summer, but with temperatures reaching into the 80s last week, the word around town — and in particular at the playground — is that summer is here! Moms and caregivers are scurrying to get things out of storage or buy sandals, shorts, hats and sunscreen. Remember that even though the official first day of summer isn’t until June 20 the sun is still strong enough to cause a burn. Put on your sunscreen!
Congratulations to the fifth- and sixth-grade band and chorus on a job well done! For some, this was a bittersweet experience as it was their children’s — in some cases, the youngest of their children — final elementary school concert. Last time, I mentioned that Darla Doorhy was recognized at the high school concert, but I forgot to say that it was done to acknowledge her 10 years of service with the Friends of Music and that she was received an award, as was the case at the elementary school concert.
Congratulations to all the elementary and junior high students who were chosen to participate in the East Hampton Middle School 5K Race with PE teacher Mr. Dolson!
Miles Hoffman Eisenberg, a 12-year-old B’nai Mitzvah student at North Fork Reform Synagogue, has been hard at work to fulfill the community service (tzedakah) component of his Bar Mitzvah requirement. Miles chose to work with Sea Tow Foundation executive director Michael Wesolowski on the producing, packing and shipping more than 50 heavy-duty stands to various locations nationwide. He will also be building and maintaining a Sea Tow Life Jacket Loaner Stand at Sea Tow headquarters in Southold, where boaters can borrow life jackets all summer long. Congratulations and Mazel Tov!
Weeding, digging, planting and watering were underway at Cutchogue New Suffolk Library as youngsters assisted the children’s librarians in planting the Centennial Children’s Garden. Stop by and visit during the summer and watch it grow. You never know when there might be some garden bounty to share.
Speaking of children’s librarians, congratulations to Mignon Osmer on receiving her master’s degree in library science! Events coming up at the library include Parachute Play for ages 2-3, Monday, June 6, 10 a.m.; Tots, Toys & Tales for ages birth to 36 months, Tuesday, June 7; and Legomania Jr. for grades K-2, Thursday, June 9, at 4 p.m. Call 631-734-6360 to register.
The annual Victoria-Glover Scholarship fundraising breakfast takes place Sunday, June 5, at Cutchogue Fire Department headquarters. The all-you-can-eat event runs from 8 a.m. to noon; the cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. For 30 years, the fund has awarded over $60,000 to deserving high school seniors in honor of Stanley Victoria and Wayne Glover. Your support will be much appreciated!
