Southold and Greenport students will perform Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” at Southold School District’s amphitheater tonight at 5 p.m.

The joint performance is presented by the school’s Shakespeare student club “Playing at Will” to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Students also performed a Shakespeare play May 26 as part of their first-ever Spring Festival of Shakespeare.

The school performance is lead by A.D. Newcomer, who trained at Shakespeare and Company and is the artist in residence for the local project, and John Tramontana, a math teacher at Greenport who also runs the Shakespeare club.

David Gamberg, superintendent of both Southold and Greenport school districts, said he believes “it is important to help support this kind of initiative.”

The superintendent said he’ll be dressed as a court jester and suggests families arrive early to watch his juggling act.

“We have this wonderful venue and it is also a way to celebrate that as a place to learn,” he said.
