‘Pulse for Pulse’ benefit, vigil for Orlando shooting scheduled

Pulse for Pulse

Southold Town will hold a vigil for the victims of Sunday’s mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, and a local fitness instructor has organized a fundraising event to benefit their loved ones and those who were injured but survived.

Supervisor Scott Russell and members of the town’s Anti-Bias Task Force will hold a vigil Monday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Silversmith’s Corner, located at Youngs Avenue and Route 25 in Southold, according to town official Denis Noncarrow.

“We will stand together with people of good will in Southold Town to share our sorrow and confirm our commitment to the human dignity of all people,” he said.

This Saturday, June 18, Cutchogue health studio JABS will hold a 45-minute “Pulse for Pulse” workout class at 9:15 a.m.

There is a suggested donation of $25 and all proceeds will benefit those affected by what’s been deemed the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history.

JABS has held previous fundraisers following other tragedies, including the Boston Marathon bombings and Hurricane Sandy.

Owner Jill Schroeder said one of her high school friends was close to three of the victims. Two of them died and a third was severely injured after being shot in the face, she said.

Aside from being the name of the nightclub that was targeted, Pulse is also the same name of a fitness dance class Ms. Schroeder created.

“It was a no-brainer to develop the fundraiser around that,” she said. “Hearing of the tragic events that took place, I immediately wanted to help in some way.”
