Blotter: Fight breaks out in Greenport over road rage incident

Southold Town police plan to make an arrest in connection with a fight that occurred on Main Street in Greenport last Sunday after a road rage incident led to fisticuffs, according to a police report.

According to the report released Tuesday, three men were crossing the street about 6:30 p.m. when a car driven by another man allegedly got too close for comfort. One of the pedestrians hit the back of the car, causing the driver to pull over, get out and confront the men.

During the confrontation the driver allegedly struck one of the pedestrians in the face, knocking him to the ground, police said. While the fight was occurring, a fifth man riding on a scooter stopped to see what was happening, but was smacked on both sides of his face by one of the pedestrians “because he looked at him wrong,” according to the police report.

Eventually, the pedestrians and the driver agreed not to press charges against one another. But the man on the scooter did ask to have the pedestrian who smacked him charged with harassment.

Police were returning to headquarters to prepare charges when “another emergency” occurred, which prevented cops from charging the pedestrian. The charges will be prepared at a later date, police said.

• Someone took a paddleboard from a Southold property last week. According to a police report filed last Wednesday, the owner said the white 2012 paddleboard was taken off her private beach on Town Harbor Terrace sometime in the last week. The paddleboard was valued at $800, police said.

• A burglar smashed their way into a farm stand on Route 48 in Peconic last Thursday, destroying a cash register and stealing the little money inside, police said.

The break-in occurred early last Thursday, when the burglar broke into the farm stand at Breeze Hill Farm through a locked back door. Police said a cash register worth $200 was found smashed on the ground.

An employee at the farm told police he didn’t know how much cash was in the register, if any, but it was likely a small amount. Police detectives are investigating the theft.

• Two bicycles were stolen from a Greenport man’s driveway Sunday, according to a police report. Police checked around the area on Sound Drive but weren’t able to find the bikes, which were valued at $200, according to a police report.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
