Fire departments from across the North Fork responded to a fire on the north end of the Southold Town transfer station property off Cox Lane Friday afternoon.

The fire appeared to be mostly wood palates and construction material, said James Bunchuk, the town’s solid waste coordinator. A worker at the site saw black smoke in the back about 3:20 p.m. and found the commercial dump on fire, Mr. Bunchuk said.

It’s unclear how the fire started, but it does not appear suspicious, Mr. Bunchuk said.

Fire crews from Cutchogue,Mattituck, Southold, Jamesport and Greenport all responded to the scene.

Mr. Bunchuk said it was the first fire at the site in at least 15 years.

No injuries were immediately reported, but ambulance crews were on scene to assist any firefighters who needed assistance.
