Featured Letter: County needs to do better by Cedar Beach

Our family has been using Cedar Beach County Park in Southold for 30 years. As Southold homeowners for that time, we are distressed by the complete lack of maintenance or garbage pickup.

The parking lot each year has more potholes and piles of garbage left by day users.

Since Cedar Beach does not require a Southold Town beach permit, anyone can access the beach. Cedar Beach has become a popular fishing spot.

With no place to leave garbage or signs asking people to pack their garbage out, the pile grows higher. As a bit of irony, the main garbage pile is directly under the osprey nest at the end of the parking lot.

While Cornell Cooperative Extension is bringing back the quality of the bay with its programs, the county is neglecting a unique beach environment that should be protected.
