Update: Police locate motorcyclist caught speeding over 100 mph
The motorcyclist who fled on foot from authorities after he was caught speeding over 100 mph Monday afternoon on Route 48 in Mattituck has been located, Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley confirmed Tuesday.
Police located the suspect, whose name has not been released, early Tuesday morning, Chief Flatley said. He added that the active investigation is ongoing and that the motorcyclist hadn’t been arrested as of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The investigation started around 3 p.m. Monday after a police sergeant observed the motorcyclist speeding and driving recklessly in Southold, Chief Flatley said.
Another officer used a radar gun to confirm the suspect was traveling over 100 mph, he added.
While police followed the motorcyclist on Route 48, Chief Flatley said there wasn’t a high-speed pursuit during the investigation.
The driver later turned onto Bergen Avenue in Mattituck, lost control of his motorcycle and ran into the woods, Chief Flatley said.
The Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Unit, Riverhead Town police and K-9 units from both Southold and Riverhead police departments responded to help in the search efforts. Aviation was called off shortly before 4 p.m. Monday.
No other information was immediately available.
