Floyd Memorial Library installs video surveillance system
The Floyd Memorial Library has received a state grant to pay for its new video surveillance system and energy-efficient lighting.
The New York State Education Department announced Wednesday the Greenport library will receive more than $32,000 for the equipment, which was installed in the spring. The grant is part of the state’s Construction Grant Program.
Library director Lisa Richland said the grant covers about two-thirds of the capital improvement project.
She added the video surveillance system is needed in order to improve security, as well as help with emergency situations, especially since the building has three floors and a small staff.
“We’re not able to supervise all parts of the library at once, so [the surveillance system] is security for staff and patrons,” she said. “I’ve been the director here since 1989 and I’ve resisted, but it’s not possible to manage the building appropriately without that.”
The state awarded $14 million in grants to 173 public libraries for capital improvements.
Southold Free Library was the only other North Fork library to receive a grant. It receive more than $15,000 to replace its windows with energy-efficient models, according to a press release issued by the SED.
