Mattituck news: Read the book, see the movie

One of the best things about summer is the chance to turn the pages of some of the books you’ve been dying to read. Mattituck-Laurel Library’s Bev Wowak understands that, so the book discussion on Thursday, Aug. 25, will combine a book with dinner and a movie. The title for the month is “Stranger on a Train” by Patricia Highsmith. The discussion starts at 4 p.m. and everyone is asked to bring a potluck dish to share afterward while watching Alfred Hitchcock’s film adaptation of the book. You must sign up and be a library patron to participate. The first 12 people to register will receive a copy of the book to keep. Get on the list today.

Teens interested in discussing the book “Elsewhere” by Gabrielle Zevin can come to the library Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. Registration is required.

I’d be remiss if I spoke about the library without mentioning the passing of children’s librarian Barbara Moore, one of its most beloved employees. Her love of children and her enthusiasm for the literature they read was one of the extraordinary gifts she shared with our community and, most of all, our children. May she rest in peace and may her family get solace from the fact that she touched so many lives.

Julie Petersen has much to be proud of. Armed with a recent master’s degree in guidance counseling, she will take on a full-time position at East Hampton High School in the fall. She’s also just returned from a three-week trip to Cuba. Best of luck in your new job!

Lots of celebrating is on tap for the first two weeks of August. Join in promoting and celebrating diversity, unity and fairness at the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force’s Unity Picnic Saturday, Aug. 13, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Peconic Community Center. Food, children’s games and a raffle will be part of this important gathering. This event is free; all are welcome.

If golf and giving back to the community are your thing, consider signing up for the 36th annual Southold-Greenport Rotary Golf Classic, set for Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Island’s End Golf and Country Club. The event costs $195 ($155 for Island’s End members) and includes greens fees and cart, driving range and free range balls, use of club facilities, lunch at 11:30 and fellowship afterward with a two-hour open bar, plus appetizers, a delicious dinner buffet, prizes, goody bag and more.
