Rita Mazzei of Peconic died Aug. 4, 2016, at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport, where she resided for the past 10 years. She was 80.
She was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Astoria, Queens, to Rose (Conti) and Vincent Caruso. Raised in Huntington, she was a graduate of Huntington High School.
On Jan. 10, 1954, she married Frank Mazzei in Huntington Station.
A resident of the North Fork since 1971, she was a member of the Southold Town Republican Club and, in earlier years, played softball on the Bob “N” Nett team of the Mattituck Women’s Softball League.
She was a devoted homemaker, said family members.
Predeceased by her husband, Frank Mazzei, on April 17, 1991, she is survived by her children Robin Mazzei of Peconic, Vincent Caruso Mazzei (Aileen) of Peconic and Rose (Michael) Anasagasti of Southold; a sister, Louise Carlson of Manorville; three grandchildren, Ryan Mazzei and Ria and Gina Anasagasti; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her daughter Debra Mazzei in January 2002 and by four siblings.
The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Aug 9, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where religious services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, with the Rev. Garret M. Johnson of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport officiating. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
