Martin Andrews

Martin Andrews, husband of Jean Newbold Andrews, died Feb. 25, 2016, after a prolonged illness.

“Andy” was born Oct. 16, 1918. He was a B-17 bomber pilot in World War II, and was shot down over Germany on his 13th mission on Sept. 6, 1943. Andy was able to land his plane in neutral Switzerland, where he and his crew were held in an internment facility. Andy was chosen by Allen Dulles for a prisoner exchange in early 1944, through which Andy memorized coded military intelligence from Dulles’s OSS network and delivered the information to the Pentagon.

After his military service, Andy wrote and directed newsreels for Paramount and Hearst Metrotone News. He became the host of the Farm Report, a weekly newsreel dedicated to farms and farmers in the 1950s. He served as the public affairs officer for the 1964-65 World’s Fair, and in later years wrote and directed documentary films, many on environmental subjects.

Andy’s wife Jean Newbold Andrews passed away July 19, 2016.

Andy is survived by his children, Emily Andrews, John Andrews, Frank Diller, Deborah Grabfield and Mark Diller, and by grandchildren Charlotte Marie Smith, Alyssa Wells Grabfield, Genevieve Marie Diller, Andrew Philip Newbold Grabfield, and Max Newbold Diller Parsons.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Southold.
