Greenport News: Athletes, get your physicals

Here’s a final reminder for all GHS athletes: Physicals will be given in the nurse’s office next Friday, Aug. 19, from 8 to 10 a.m. on a first come, first served basis. Computerized concussion testing will take place Aug. 15, 16 and 22 between 8 and 11 a.m. in the third-floor computer lab. This test is for seventh-, ninth- and eleventh-graders or those participating in a sport for the first time. Varsity and JV football starts Monday, Aug. 15, at 7 a.m. All other varsity and JV sports start Aug. 22, most at 7 a.m. Check with your coach if you’re not sure.

There was a misprint in my last column that I’d like to correct. The date of the Greenport Fire Department’s annual chicken barbecue is Saturday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. See you there!

Last call for the San Simeon trip to either Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun casino on Monday, Aug. 15. You’ll depart at 10:15 a.m. on the Sea Jet and return on the 7:15 p.m. boat. The cost of $30 per person includes the bonus package. For tickets, call San Simeon at 631-477-2110 or Paula Thorp at 631-477-2392.

My sincerest sympathies are extended to Beatsy Tuthill and her daughters, Jackie and Erika, and their families on the passing of her husband, Jerry Tuthill. His passing has left a void in our Greenport community that can never be filled.

The combined efforts of the Greenport and Southold Rotary Clubs will bring you the 16th annual Golf Classic Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Island’s End Golf and Country Club, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Donations are $195 per person (Island’s End members pay $155). The cost includes club facilities, greens fees and golf cart, luncheon at 11:30 a.m., two-hour open bar with appetizers at 5:30 p.m., dinner, prizes and more. Call Walter Krupski (631-298-8026) or Kevin McLaughlin (631-765-6085) to sign up.

I was very sad to hear that when school starts in less than a month, Spanish teacher Katie DiGregorio will not be there. She has accepted a position with the Smithtown School District. I will miss her immensely but wish her all the luck in the world in her new venture.

Congratulations and a lifetime of happiness to Shameka Sanders and Jeff Clark, who became Mr. and Mrs. Clark on Aug. 6.
