Cops: Suspect in machete attack located in Rhode Island

The suspect who allegedly used a machete last Friday to attack a man and woman was arrested Thursday in Rhode Island, Southold Town police said. 

Esvin Rolando Escobar, 26, of Greenport was charged with first-degree assault, a felony, and additional charges are likely, police said. Mr. Escobar was arrested by Southold detectives along with members of the U.S. Marshal’s New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force and Rhode Island State Police.

Mr. Escobar was located in Central Falls, R.I., police said. He was brought before a Rhode Island court and waived extradition. He is currently being held in Rhode Island awaiting transport by New York authorities who will bring him before the Southold Justice Court for arraignment, police said.

Mr. Escobar has been previously deported and is currently in the country illegally, police said.

The attack occurred at Second Street home in Greenport. Both victims were both treated at the scene by Greenport Fire Department personnel and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital. They were later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital. Police did not release the identities of the victims.
