Greenport News: Another round of happy birthdays

08/27/2016 5:00 AM |

I can’t say enough about how much energy and time two-year Greenport PTA president Kim Moore-Swann puts into her job. Along with other hardworking members, she’ll spend Labor Day Saturday hosting the PTA’s annual craft fair at the school. It will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine. If you’ve got something to sell, consider securing a booth for $50 as a friend of the PTA. If you’d like to donate something for the auction, contact Sandy Martocchia, Kim Moore-Swann, Cynthia Bumble or Laura Graffagnino-Arena or call 631-846-1459. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Speaking of rain or shine, nothing stops members of Greenport Fire Department’s Standard Hose Company from putting on their annual chicken barbecue, which took place Saturday. If you waited too long to get tickets, you were out of luck; the event had been sold out for weeks. It was, as always, delicious, with fare that tickled the tastebuds. A hearty round of applause for all those involved in its success.

Registration is in progress for St. Patrick’s and St. Agnes fall/winter CYO basketball for grades 3-8. Email Jen at [email protected] for forms and information.

During the second weekend in August, you can count on two annual family reunions occurring. The Bondarchuk family held theirs Aug. 13 at Orient Beach State Park, with 35 in attendance. It’s kind of scary when someone from my generation turns out to be the oldest member present. This year, Tony Bondarchuk, son of Peter Bondarchuk, captured that title. Peter’s great-grandson, Blake Hollinger, was the youngest to attend. Thank you to my cousin Don Bondarchuk, who supplies me with this information each year.

The Heaney family’s 60th annual reunion took place Aug. 14, with approximately 80 family members and friends in attendance. This year it was hosted by Rose and Keith Baker. Family patriarch Bernie Heaney relinquished his title as oldest member present to his sister-in-law, Vicki Heaney, and I do believe that the youngest Heaney there was Jeffrey Patrick Bubb, great-grandson of Jack Heaney.

Extra-special birthday wishes go out to our grandson, Jamey Decker.  It seems impossible that five years have passed since you entered the world and brought us more happiness than I ever thought possible. Jamey turns five Aug. 31.

Special birthday wishes also go out to Rose Berryman, who will celebrate her 90th birthday Sept. 4. Happy birthday, Aunt Ro!
