The driver of a Chevrolet sedan crossed over the median on Route 48 in Mattituck Saturday afternoon and crashed into a pole, narrowly avoiding any oncoming traffic, Southold Town police said.

The Mattituck Fire Department responded to the scene and used heavy rescue to free the driver from the vehicle, which sustained most of the damage on the front end of the driver’s side. The driver, the only occupant in the car, told police the he fell asleep at the wheel, police said.

The vehicle was traveling westbound on Route 48 and crossed the median to the eastbound side before striking the pole. The driver was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said. Police did not disclose the extent of the driver’s injuries.

A small section of the road was briefly closed near Cox Neck Road.

The driver is expected to be issued a traffic summons, police said.
