Carroll Grimes

Southold resident Carroll Grimes, formerly of Pennsylvania, died of Parkinson’s disease Aug. 29 at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport. She was 85.

The daughter of Richard and Margaret (Carroll) Grimes, she was born July 5, 1931, in Brooklyn.

Ms. Grimes earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s degree in English Literature from New York University and a Ph.D. from Ohio State. She taught English literature for 35 years and served as chair of humanities for Pittsburgh University in Johnstown, Pa. She was a member of The Hemingway Society.

Predeceased by her brothers Richard and William, Ms. Grimes is survived by her sisters, Nancy McLernon of Flushing and Frances Leudesdorf of Southold, and her brother Dr. James Grimes of Santa Ana, Calif.

Cremation was private. A memorial Mass will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
