Motorcyclist caught speeding over 100 mph surrenders
The motorcyclist who fled on foot from authorities after he was caught speeding over 100 mph on Route 48 in June surrendered Friday morning and arrested on felony drug charges, Southold Town police said.
Police attempted to pullover Terrance Bennett, 25, of West Babylon after he was first caught driving recklessly in Southold around 3 p.m. on June 27, officials said.
An officer used a radar gun to confirm the suspect was traveling over 100 mph, police Chief Martin Flatley has said.
Mr. Bennett later lost control of his vehicle when he reached a sharp turn on Bergen Avenue in Mattituck and fled on foot into nearby woods and farms, officials said.
The Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Unit, Riverhead Town police and K-9 units from both Southold and Riverhead police departments responded to help in the search efforts.
About one ounce of cocaine was recovered from the motorcycle, police said.
The manhunt was called off after few hours and police confirmed the following day they had identified the suspect.
Following a police investigation, Mr. Bennett surrendered at police headquarters Friday, officials said.
He was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree unlawful fleeing from a police officer, reckless driving, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and six other traffic violations, police said.
Mr. Bennett was arraigned Friday in Southold Town Justice Court and released after posting a $70,000 bond. He’s due back in court Sept. 23.
