Southold news: Homecoming, alumni soccer game this weekend

I wished my co-worker Sam Perry a happy birthday last week, but her day is today, Sept. 22, so if you work with her at her full-time job, give her a birthday hug for me! Also celebrating soon are Liam Stinett, Sept. 25; Joyce Wilkens Sept. 26; Chris Manfredi Jr. Sept. 28; Mike Eckhardt, Oct. 3; Carol Chilton-Miller, Oct. 4; and Melissa Hyatt-DeSimone, Oct. 5.

Belated happy anniversary to Don and Doris Bayles, who marked 70 years of marriage Sept. 1. Diane and Dick Jost of Wading River hosted the couple for a celebration with friends. Congratulations!

The final outdoor Sunday yoga at Southold Historical Society is this Sunday, Sept. 25, from 8 to 9 a.m. on the museum complex green across from the firehouse.

It’s Homecoming weekend! To kick things off, the girls’ varsity soccer team plays Port Jefferson Friday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. Festivities continue Saturday when the boys’ varsity team plays Greenport at 11 a.m. After that, at 1 p.m., players from years past will gather for the seventh annual alumni game. If you have a stash of children’s books but no children to read them, Ben and Lyla have a solution! This Saturday, Sept. 24, they will collect gently used children’s books for CAST and The Book Fairies at their family’s home, 1385 Jasmine Lane in Southold, from 10 a.m. to noon. They call it an Ice Pop Book Drive because all donors get an ice pop and a chance to win a special gift basket. Let’s help this adorable duo share books with other children.

Also get in touch if you’ve never displayed a flag before and would like to.

An Italian Night fundraising dinner for ELIH will be held Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Soundview Restaurant from noon to 8 p.m. Dinner is your choice of chicken parmesan or spaghetti with meatballs. Tickets are $20. You can get yours at the ELIH Corner gift shop or at the door, or call 631-477-2047.

Southold PTA also continues to collect Box Tops for Education coupons, which can be found on many everyday items. Those who don’t have elementary-age children can drop off coupons at Southold Free Library or mail them to Southold PTA, P.O. Box 470, Southold, NY 11971.

KidStuff coupon books for a PTA fundraiser were sent home and payment ($25 per book) is due tomorrow. There are hundreds of coupons; go to the PTA Facebook page for the list. If you don’t want to participate, return your unsold books.

My next deadline is Sunday, Oct. 2. Until then, live outside your box.
