Shoreham-Wading River High School’s top singles player, Jillian Dinowitz, believes she is getting better. Her coach, Debbie Lutjen, agrees, seeing improvement in the junior.

The evidence was there in black and white. On Sept. 9, Dinowitz edged Southold/Greenport’s Sarah Jannazzo, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). When the two girls tennis teams played again on Monday, Dinowitz had an easier time of it, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jannazzo and raising her season record to 4-8.

The team score in the Suffolk County League VIII encounter was the same: 7-0 in host Shoreham’s favor, including the result by Dinowitz, who put away 18 winners with nice shot placement.

Shoreham (6-5, 6-2) took each of the seven individual matches in two sets. Jackie Colalillo (6-1, 6-2 over Aly Boyle), Kara Gately (6-1, 6-1 over Casie Vaccariello) and Jackie Pitts (6-0, 6-0 over Alex Apadula) won their singles matches.

The third doubles team of Danielle Amato and Emily Niski, two juniors in their first year of playing tennis, upped their team-best record to 9-3 with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Liz Garcia and Sara Reilly.

The second doubles pairing of Brianna Arabio and Catherine Erb improved to 8-3, beating Grace Bruer and Daniella Menjivar, 6-0, 6-1.

In first doubles, Amanda Detiberiis and Alice Van Wickler scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Emma Alvarez and Willow Wilcenski.

Rebuilding Southold (0-7, 0-7) has yet to win an individual match this season.
