Herman Haskin Hubbard

Herman Haskin Hubbard of Mattituck died Sept. 27 at his daughter’s home in Mattituck. He was 90.  

The son of Haskin and Addie Wright Hubbard, he was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Dinwoodie, Va.

Mr. Hubbard worked as a custodian for Mattituck High School, retiring after 37 years. He also worked for the Cardinale family at Mattituck Shopping Center, set up bowling pins at Mattituck Lanes, worked as a custodian for Kerrigan Plumbing and Mattituck Presbyterian Church and also was a farmer at Cider’s Farms.  He was an active member of the Unity Baptist Church in Mattituck, where he had been baptized.

Family members said Mr. Hubbard was an “excellent mason,” who built many fireplaces, patios, and other brick structures. They described him as dependable and kind, with a strong devotion to his family and his faith.

Predeceased by his wife, Thelma Davis Hubbard; his sons, Haskin and William, Mr. Hubbard is survived by his daughters, Diane Bradley, Janice Barnes, Marie Brown, Connie Francis, Rene Calvacca, Audrey Kaypak, Katherine Hubbard and Judy Aytulin; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his brother, Junius; sisters, Lillie Mae Lynch, and Minnie Ann Frelix and two grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Oct. 3, at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.  An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Unity Baptist Church in Mattituck.  Burial will follow at the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Southold.
