Rita A. Murphy

Rita A. Murphy of Mattituck died Dec. 27, 2016, at The Bluffs at Peconic Landing in Greenport. She was 84.

She was born in New York City Aug. 7, 1932, to Vincent and Rita (Flood) Attanasi and raised in the Bronx. She was a graduate of St. Francis Elementary School and St. Barnabas High School both in the Bronx and later graduated from Berkley Business School in Manhattan.

On Nov. 3, 1956, she married Paul V. Murphy at St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church in the Bronx. They summered in Hampton Bays and have been North Fork residents for the past 60 years.

Rita was a real estate broker with Stype Brothers in Mattituck and recognized as one of their top salespersons.

She had also been a PTA member and president at Sacred Heart School in Cutchogue and Mercy High School in Riverhead and a communicant of Sacred Heart Parish.

Predeceased by her husband in 2012, she is survived by her children, Rita Jurgielewicz (Joseph) of Hamburg, Pa., Patti Young (William) of Mattituck, Paul Murphy (Kathleen) of Hamburg, Pa. and James Murphy (Christine) of Mattituck; sister Carol Peters (Joseph) of Riverhead; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Joey and Christine (baby Emma), Jim and Stephanie, Michael and Brian Jurgielewicz, Laura and Tom Carroll (William and baby Patrick), Kathleen, Danielle Young, Paul, Jillian and Patrick Murphy and Nicole and Courtney Murphy.

The family received visitors Dec. 30 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 31 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Msgr. Joseph W. Staudt. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
