Richard A. Grigonis

Richard A. Grigonis, a former resident of Southold, died at his home in Greenport Jan. 12, 2017. He was 79.

He was born in Southold Dec. 24, 1937, to Charles and Mary (Jernick) Grigonis and attended Southold schools.

From 1955 to 1958, Dick served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant and received the Good Conduct Medal.

From 1958 to 1967 he was employed by the Long Island Cauliflower Association. In 1967, he purchased Grig’s Service Station in Southold Village. He operated the business until 1980, when he went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Southold, retiring in 2004.

Surviving are his wife Judith (née Montgomery); his children, Marianne, and her husband, Bob Reilly of Southold, Richard “Rick” Grigonis, his wife, Colleen, and their children, Richard “Ricky” and Elizabeth, of Sag Harbor and Donna Jester, her husband, Robert, and their son, Tyler, of Southold; two sisters, Margaret Fox of Alabama and Patricia J. McNeil and her husband, Richard, of Portville, N.Y.; his stepchildren, Tina and her husband, Dan Finne of Greenport, Jeff Nockelin and his wife, Naomi, of Greenport, Lisa Cameran and her husband, Chris, of Georgia and Donna Medina and her husband, Angel, of Orient; along with 15 stepgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Rita (née Fiore) and siblings Charles, Mary Neese, Anne, Monica, William and George.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment with U.S. Marine Corps honors will follow at the church cemetery.
