Susan Adams Mihalik

Susan Adams Mihalik passed away Dec. 14, 2017, at Peconic Landing in Greenport. She was 96.

She is survived by her two sons, William A. Mihalik and John C. Mihalik of Medford; her sister-in-law, Alma Mihalik of Greenport and many nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, William Mihalik and her younger siblings, Clyde Melvin “Mel” Adams (Theresa “Terry” Amelia Uhrich) and Elizabeth “Betty” Adams Williams (John Williams).

Susan was born in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Clyde Melvin Adams Sr. and Minnie Sugg Adams, and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1938. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Michigan in 1942 and a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University.

During World War II, she worked for the U.S. War Department, Detroit Ordnance District, as an auditor of defense contracts. She moved to New York City where she worked and then met and married her husband in 1950, after which they moved to Port Washington where they lived for 48 years.

Susan had a long career as a social worker for Nassau County Social Services in children’s services followed by a part-time position for the Episcopal Diocese family consultation services. She was a longtime member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Academy of Certified Social Workers, the American Association of University Women and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport.

Susan and William moved to Peconic Landing in 2002 where they lived with great support from the dedicated staff.

The family will hold a visitation at Peconic Landing Sunday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. A memorial service will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, followed by interment at 10:30 am at Calverton National Cemetery.
