Joseph Charles Busso

On Wednesday, May 2, 2018, Joseph Charles Busso died peacefully at the age of 87 with his family by his side. He is profoundly missed by his beloved wife of 67 years, Elizabeth “Betty”; loving children, Christine and son in-law, Bart Ruroede, of Greenport, Joseph Charles “JC” and daughter-in-law Diana Busso of Idaho, and Timothy and daughter-in-law Edna-Mae Busso of Southold; sister, Evelyn Field of Wantagh; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Joe, an ambassador of good times, was born in Greenport on April 22, 1931, to Nicholas and Adel (Longanetti) Busso. He attended Greenport High School, where he excelled on both the football and gymnastics teams. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served his country for four years. An entrepreneur by nature, he returned to Greenport to raise his family and pursue a variety of business relationships, including leading the operations at the local IGA Supermarket, Pepperidge Farm bread truck and Jacquin’s Liquors. When he finally decided to slow down, he turned his attention to driving the East Marion-Oysterponds school bus route operated by Sunrise Bus Company. The family fondly remembers the stories of students saying how they wanted to grow up to be a school bus driver just like Mr. Busso.

Joe had many interests involving family and friends, which included a Wednesday night poker club and a passion for travel. In addition, he demonstrated a strong commitment to his community by actively serving on the Oysterponds Board of Education and as an East Marion Fire Department volunteer. In 2008, Joe was honored for 50 years of service with the East Marion Fire Department.

A celebration of his life was held May 7 at St. Agnes R.C. Church, followed by a burial at the church cemetery.

In memory of Joe, please raise a glass of your choice to celebrate life, community, family and friends.

In honor of Joe’s memory, please consider a donation to the East Marion Fire Department or the American Diabetes Association.

We will miss you, Joe.

Arrangements were entrusted to Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
