Alma T. Suter

Alma T. Suter, a lifelong Mattituck resident, died at her home on Jan. 9, 2012. She was 97 years old.

She was born in Mattituck on Jan. 19, 1914, to Burt B. and Bertha (Hallock) Tuthill. A graduate of Mattituck High School, she married Martin Suter in 1937. They lived in New Jersey for a time before settling in Mattituck, where she was a co-owner of Raynor & Suter Hardware on Love Lane in the village.

Alma was a member of the Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary; the Southold Town Republican Club, where she was a committee person; and the North Fork Country Club, where she was Ladies Champion 17 times.

Predeceased on Nov. 12, 2001, by her husband, Martin, Ms. Suter is survived by a cousin, Caroline Stepnoski of Riverhead; her adopted children, Michael (Monica) and Kathy Raynor; and her close friends, Henry and Mary Raynor of Cutchogue.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 13, at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. George Gaffga will officiate. Interment will follow at Cutchogue Cemetery.
