Helen A. Lucas

Helen A. Lucas of Cutchogue died Jan. 5, 2012, at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport, where she had been a resident since 2009. She was 93 years old.

She was born in New York City on July 27, 1918, to Casimir and Anna (Halaikjo) Maciborka and married Paul Lucas there on July 6, 1941.

Formerly a longtime summer resident, she retired when she was 72 and moved here permanently in 1990. For nearly 30 years, she was a school aide at Maxwell High School in East New York.

She was a member of AFSCME Retirees District Council 37 (an affiliate of the AFL/CIO) and was a communicant of St. Brigid’s in New York City and Sacred Heart Parish in Cutchogue.

Predeceased by her husband on Dec. 13, 1977, Ms. Lucas is survived by two daughters, Joyce Stevens of Cutchogue and Amy Minton of Florida; four grandchildren, Michael and Ross Taylor and Erica and Ashley Minton; and two great-granddaughters, Emily and Katelyn Taylor.

The family received friends Sunday, Jan. 8, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Jan. 9, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church by Father Marian Bicz. Ms. Lucas was interred at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn with her husband, Paul.
