Mona Rose McCarthy

Mona Rose Fitzpatrick McCarthy passed into Eternity on January 15, 2012, on her beloved husband Robert’s birthday, surrounded by her loving children. She was 88 years young.

Mona was born on Aug. 30, 1923, in Port Glasgow, Scotland, from where she emigrated with her family aboard the SS Caledonia in 1929. One of Mona’s earliest and clearest memories was when she first laid eyes on the Statue of Liberty as the Caledonia sailed into New York Harbor. She always treasured that moment and that memory.

Mona and Bob met in San Diego after his return from active duty. They married in 1946 and moved to New York to have and raise their family. They purchased the Second Bayview Schoolhouse and rebuilt it into a family home, where they raised their eight children.

Mona was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, as well as a 50-plus-year member of St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold, and a very active member and past president of the Rosary Altar Society.

Mona is survived by her eight children: Maureen, Daniel (Penelope), Sheila, Joseph (Theresa), Mona (Paul), Robert (Patricia), Patrick (Penelope), Thomas (Susan).

Mona was also a proud and loving grandmother of 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
