Gertrude E. Koop

Gertrude E. Koop of Mattituck died March 16 at the Riverhead Care Center following a long battle with heart disease. She was 87.

She was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., to Gertrude I. and John F. Koop. She attended Buffalo State Teachers College and Columbia University and was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma – Beta Xi Chapter.

Ms. Koop moved to Mattituck in 1947 when she began teaching home economics at Mattituck School. For 36 1/2 years, according to family members, she taught generations of Mattituck girls and, later, boys how to cook and sew.
Trudy was always involved in community activities, her family said, and was ever grateful for the caring and support she received following her devastating house fire in 1952.

She was a member of the Mattituck Historical Society, the Long Island Mineral & Geological Society, the Eastern Long Island Button Club and the 4-H Youth Development Organization.

Ms. Koop was a congregant at Mattituck Presbyterian Church and was involved with its thrift shop.

Predeceased by her siblings, John F. Koop, formerly of Tuckerton, N.J., and Dorothy M. Wold, formerly of Riverhead, she is survived by her nieces, Wendy Masteller of Westfield, N.J., Trudy Wold of Mattituck and Laurie Giese of Tipton, Mo.; her nephews, Richard Koop of San Diego, Calif. and Harry Wold of San Antonio, Texas; her sister-in-law, Kathryn (Betty) Koop of Monroe Township, N.J.; her grand-nieces, Carrie Brundage, Susan Masteller, Lindsay Myers, Ashley Koop, Heather Feldkamp and Kathleen Bull; and her grand-nephew John Koop.

Visiting hours were held March 20 at Defriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, followed by a funeral at Mattituck Presbyterian Church, the Rev. George Gaffga officiating. Interment took place March 21 at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.
