Brian Joseph Vincent

Brian Joseph Vincent of Greenport died March 16 at Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was 92.

He was born March 15, 1920, in Fordham, N.Y., to Catherine (Manning) and Bernard J. Vincent. He graduated from Manhasset High School in 1937 and the New York State Merchant Marine Academy in 1940. He sailed to South America, then served in the U.S. Navy as an aviator in the Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Vincent was later a pilot with American Overseas Airlines, then worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as chief of its flight standards division.

He married Pamela Wakem in 1950. They lived in Westbury, then spent 10 years in Springfield, Va., and 35 years in Plandome, N.Y. He served as mayor of Plandome for 12 years and as a volunteer firefighter there for 28 years. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Peconic Landing in Greenport, where they have lived for the last 10 years.

Family members said Mr. Vincent worked tirelessly for others. He was a member of the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus, the Economic Opportunity Council of Manhasset and Great Neck, the American Legion and the Manhasset Community Fund.

He is survived by his wife; his children, Cathleen Matthews of Port Washington, Brian Jr., of Hampstead, N.C., Ellen Murray of The Woodlands, Texas, and John, of New York City; his siblings, Robert, Joseph, Mary Schuster and Gerard; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Kieran, who was killed on Iwo Jima during World War II, and his sister Catherine Kobell.

The family received friends March 18 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 19 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, followed by interment at the church cemetery.
