Conrad J. Eckhardt

Conrad J. Eckhardt of Southold died April 17 at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Greenport. He was 78.

He was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Manhattan to Bernard and Elsie (Cook) Eckhardt and was raised in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

A longtime North Fork resident, he worked for 30 years at Plum Island Animal Disease Center, retiring in 1986. He had also been a Little League umpire.

Family members said he enjoyed spending time with them, working on latch hook rugs, playing bingo and participating in the Golden Games. They said he was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was especially proud of his sobriety.

Mr. Eckhardt is survived by his children, Michael and Michelle, both of Southold, and Melissa McGowan of Mattituck; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friendsThursday, April 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, April 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. The Rite of Committal will be private.
