Barbara Jane Dittman

Barbara Jane Dittman of Peconic died April 25, 2012, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, in her 88th year.

Barbara was born March 11, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to William Evans and Matilda (Mittnacht) Morgan, attended Erasmus Hall High School and graduated from Ohio University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She married longtime friend Richard (Dick) in 1953. They settled in Westfield, N.J.

Although active in the church and community, with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and with part-time excursions to enjoy their Peconic home, Barbara’s overriding devotion was to raising their family and providing a home that all would cherish.

She returned to a college master’s degree program, emerging in 1979 as an occupational therapist, her long-postponed avocation. She successfully headed the occupational therapy department at a county hospital in Scotch Plains, N.J., until her retirement in 1987.

Barbara and Dick moved to Peconic in 1988. She did occasional occupational therapy work in the area, acquired DAR membership, advanced to the rank of Commander in the U.S. Power Squadrons organization and took most opportunities and great pleasure in recreational boating, sailing, beach walking and such. She thoroughly enjoyed the 24/7 togetherness.

Barbara was known for her captivating smile, ready wit, insightful observations and sincerity toward all.

Barbara’s surviving family includes her brother, William; her husband, Dick; her sons, Evans, Peter and David; and four grandchildren.

The family received friends at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Funeral services took place April 28, followed by interment at Cutchogue Cemetery.
