Marie E. Vames

Marie E. Vames of Southold, formerly of Port Washington, died April 26 at Pegasus House Palliative Care Center at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 90.

She was born May 2, 1921, in Winthrop, Mass., to Anita (Fougeré) and Walter Lamplough, and attended Winthrop High School. She married Peter Vames on Oct. 28, 1945, at St. Peter of Alcantara Parish in Port Washington. Ms. Vames worked as a telephone operator at Bell Telephone for over 15 years.

She was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Atlantic Hook and Ladder Company of Port Washington, and belonged to the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society in Port Washington and Jamesport Homemakers.

Family members said she made beautiful baby bonnets and other needlework items, and she loved to make people laugh.

Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Vames is survived by her daughter, Anita Busby of Peconic; her son, Stephen, of Babylon; her sister, Margaret Cathey of California; her uncle, Walter “Pat” Fougeré, age 94, with whom she grew up as a sibling; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A seventh great-grandchild is due in June. She was also predeceased by her sister Mildred Dougherty and her brother, Walter Lamplough Jr.

Visiting hours took place April 29 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass was held April 30 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold, followed by interment at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury.
