Edgar J. Smith Jr.

We mourn the passing of Edgar J. Smith Jr. (November 17, 1934 – May 23, 2012), resident of Stamford, Conn., and Orient, N.Y.

Ed was a graduate of Manhasset, N.Y., public schools, Hamilton College and Columbia Law School. He served in the New York Air National Guard Reserves of the United States Air Force. Ed retired in 1999 as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Witco Corporation, after serving in the same post for most of his career at General Signal Corporation.

Ed served the communities he lived in up to the end, as a member of the Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., Village Planning and Zoning boards, the board of the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, N.Y., and more recently the boards of the Oysterponds Historical Society in Orient, N.Y., and Learning in Retirement in Stamford. Ed loved music, singing with many choral groups, including the University Glee Club, where he was a member for almost 50 years.

Ed Smith was predeceased by his sister, Nancy. He is survived by his loving children, Allison and Andrew, and their spouses, David and Jennifer; his grandchildren, Julia, Nathaniel, Rebecca, Timothy and Vivian; and his longtime companion, Charlotte Droeger.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Orient Congregational Church, 23045 Main Road, Orient, NY 11957.
