Clara A. Harris

Clara A. Harris of Mattituck died at her home on Sept. 21. She was 83 years old.

She was born Oct. 15, 1928, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to John and Hedwig (Petraszewski) Kander. A graduate of Mattituck High School, she married Barney P. Harris on Oct. 1, 1950, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

She had been a secretary for the U.S. government prior to becoming a mother. She then became a homemaker and child care provider.

Ms. Harris was a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church and a member of the Sacred Heart Rosary Society. She had also been a 4-H leader.

She is survived by her husband; her daughters, Susan, of Riverhead, JoAnn Sceviour of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sharon Gulyas of Smithfield, Va.; her sister, Rita Wowak of Florida; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Bonnie Scagel in 2006.

The family received friends Sept. 24 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where Sacred Heart Rosary Society and parish prayer services were held during the afternoon. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 25 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church by Father Marian Bicz. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.
