Robert A. McCaffery

Robert A. McCaffery, commander, U.S. Navy (﴾retired),﴿ of Springfield, Va., died Dec. 15 at the Halquist Memorial Hospice in Arlington, Va.

He was born March 5, 1935, in Greenport, the youngest son of Frances and Martin McCaffery, and grew up in Southold. He graduated from Villanova University and completed naval flight training in Pensacola, Fla. He received a master’s degree from the naval postgraduate school in Monterey, Calif., and served 21 years as a U.S. naval aviator, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. His final assignment was the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Kelly McCaffery; his children, Martin, Kelly Harvey, Robert, Timothy, Kathleen Stanley and Terrance; his brother, John, of Bethpage; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Elizabeth.

Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be announced.
