So much for this being the year of the outsider.

If there was a year in which an outsider was to wrench the Suffolk County League VII boys golf championship from the hands of Mattituck and Eastport-South Manor, which had dominated the league for years, it was this year. Before the season teed off, Mattituck coach Paul Ellwood proclaimed the race for the league title “wide open.” READ

The Mattituck High School girls volleyball team knows there’s no place like home. So the Tuckers kept telling themselves that, clicked their heels together and their wish appears to have come true.

By wrapping up its regular season Monday night with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-11 road win over Hampton Bays, Mattituck secured second place in Suffolk County League VII. But, more importantly, the Tuckers also earned what coach Frank Massa believes will be a home Suffolk Class B playoff match against Bayport-Blue Point on Nov. 2. READ

It isn’t the wins, losses and statistics that Liz Dwyer is going to remember as much as the human moments, the fun times she enjoyed while playing tennis for Mattituck High School. She’ll remember the sign language she developed with her practice partner, Emily Mowdy, so they could let each other know during a match whether they were winning or losing. She’ll remember the laughs shared during practices.
