Though family and friends have been organizing a fundraiser in memory of the late Michael Brown for years, they decided to switch things up this year, organizing the Miles for Mike 5K Walk/Run, which kicked off today at Greenport High School.

This Saturday you can do some running to stay in shape and help kids stay in shape, too.

The Southold Athletic Association is hosting its annual 5K & Fun Run, which has helped fund a number of health and wellness initiatives within the Southold School District over the past few years.  (more…)

The Southold Athletic Association held its 4th annual 5K and fun run Saturday morning. The event is held to provide health and wellness opportunities to Southold students and to benefit The North Fork Parish Outreach Food Pantry in Greenport.

Participants were asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food to keep the local food bank filled.

North Road Deli donated bagels, Woodside Orchards donated apples, and the Southold IGA donated water for the runners.

The winner in the men’s division was 16-year-old Jerome Vessichio of Rocky Point with a time of 18:51.5.

The winner in the women’s division was Lindsay LaFleur, 26, of Holbrook, with a time of 20:09.4.

The L.I. for OK 5K run/walk was hosted at Jean Cochran Park on Peconic Lane in Peconic Sunday.

Participants were asked to bring donations of socks and underwear, toiletries, work gloves, heavy-duty garbage bags, baby supplies and shoes. There was music and a table for kids to make greeting cards to be sent to young tornado victims.

All proceeds go to tornado victims in Oklahoma.
