Keegan Syron and Jake Skrezec have different physiques and playing styles, but they both share a common trait: toughness. That toughness will enable both Greenport/Southold/Mattituck high school football players to take their game to the collegiate level.

Keegan Syron powered his way to three for Greenport/Southold/Mattituck touchdowns in the final game of the regular season at home Friday night, downing Southampton/Ross, 36-6. Syron might have score more had he not been injured early in the third quarter as the senior running back watched the balance of the game while icing down his ankle.

With the win, the Porters finished the season at 4-4 in Suffolk County Division IV, but last week’s 8-6 loss to Port Jefferson looms large as the postseason has slipped away.

Or has it?

Chance Anderson’s pleasant demeanor and friendly face can lead to false impressions. Make no mistake, when he is on the football field, Anderson is a bruising hitter, not hesitant at all about lowering his shoulder into an opponent.

That hard-nosed playing style is what earned Anderson the nickname “Rhino.”

Like ghostly figures from a horror flick, they slowly emerged from the thick fog that had eerily descended upon Dorrie Jackson Memorial Field, making for a rather surreal scene. The dejected looks on the faces of the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck players reflected the pain they undoubtedly felt in their hearts as they quietly trudged by on the rain-soaked field.

The Porters knew they lost a lot more than a high school football game.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Greenport/Southold/Mattituck high school football coach Jack Martilotta believes his team has one path to the playoffs. “We got to win out,” he said.

The Porters (3-3 Suffolk County Division IV) have home games remaining against Port Jefferson and Southampton/Pierson.

Greenport place kicker Tashan Lawrence #8 executes a perfect on side kick to start the first quarter against Wyandanch at Greenport High School in Greenport on September 7th, 2016

At a school barbecue on Friday, Greenport High School senior Tashan Lawrence remarked that he could go for something to eat. Hearing this, math teacher Greg Dlhopolsky told him: “The food is literally 100 yards away. All you have to do is run.”

To that the sharp-witted Lawrence replied, “The only thing I run 100 yards for, Mr. D, is touchdowns.”
