Throughout her life, Kathy Wallace of East Marion has always been connected to Greenport schools.

Born in Greenport, she graduated from Greenport High School in 1972. After splitting her college career between SUNY/Oneonta and Southampton College, she returned home and began substitute teaching at her alma mater.  READ

Team RICE 870’s drive team, which controls the robot during competition, in Detroit. The team is made up of sophomores from Southold and Greenport high schools.

The Southold/Greenport robotics team returned from Detroit with something to be proud of: a trip to the semifinal round at the world competition.

“It was great,” sophomore Drew Wolf of Greenport said. “I think because we’re very young it was definitely an invaluable experience and we all learned a lot. We have two more years to try to get back to Detroit and Worlds, which is great for us.”

More than 400 teams qualified for worlds, so competitors were grouped into subdivisions. The Southold/Greenport group, Team RICE 870, was a member of the Archimedes Division, which included 68 teams.  READ

LaValle, Palumbo meet with North Fork students

High school students from Greenport and Southold filed into the library at Mattituck High School Friday, joining Mattituck students seated in chairs forming a “U.”

Seated across from the students was State Senator Ken LaValle and State Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo, who fielded questions from the students about gun laws, school safety and mental health issues.

“I love the opportunity to come and interact with students because you are the future,” Mr. LaValle said. — READ

One topic has dominated the conversation this week in Greenport: the hometown Porters’ championship journey.

Purple and gold balloons line the streets in front of many businesses. Signs hang outside others urging the boys basketball team success. Patrons at the bar at Andy’s last Saturday kept jotting down the score of Greenport’s Southeast Region championship game as it flashed on the screen, thanks to a Facebook livestream, so they could quickly relay it to anyone who walked in.  READ
